About Dad Joke HQ

I am Rob. I run this site.

It started because I kept a running list of dad jokes and had nowhere sensible to put it. Every joke site I looked at was either a wall of undifferentiated text or a slot machine that fires 1 random joke at you and nothing else. Neither is useful when what you actually want is 15 Halloween jokes, right now, because you have a class party in the morning.

So this is that. Jokes sorted by topic, on pages you can scroll, with some writing around them about why the jokes in that category work the way they do.

What is here

34 topics, a few hundred jokes, and a form for sending in your own. The topics split roughly 3 ways: things people are fans of, holidays and seasons, and the everyday categories that never go out of date — animals, food, work, school.

Every joke on the site is clean. That is not a marketing line, it is the actual filter. If it would land badly at a dinner table with somebody’s grandmother there, it is not going up.

Where the jokes come from

Two places, and it is worth being straight about which is which.

The starter set came from the public joke bank that has been circulating for decades — the ones you half-remember from a cracker or a lolly stick. Nobody owns those. They were collected, cleaned up, deduplicated and sorted into topics, which took a while and is genuinely the useful part, but I did not write them.

The second source is people sending them in, and that is the half I care about. Those are the jokes that are not anywhere else. Every submission is read by a person before it goes anywhere near the site — not a filter, a person — and if you put your first name on it, the name goes up with the joke.

The rules I write by

A few things that are fixed, so you know what to expect:

No joke goes up without something written around it. If I add a topic, I write the page for it. A list on its own is not worth anybody’s time.

Every joke is on the page when it loads. Nothing here waits on JavaScript to appear. If you have a slow connection or a screen reader, you get the same page I do.

No joke gets its own page. A 1-line joke on its own URL is a thin page and a few hundred of those is a thin site. They live in groups, on topic pages, where they are actually useful.

Clean means clean. There is no adult section here and there will not be one on this domain.

What this is not

It is not a comedy blog and I am not a comedian. I am a guy who likes bad puns enough to sort several hundred of them by subject. If you came here for craft analysis you will be disappointed, though there is a bit of it at the bottom of each topic page, mostly because I got curious about why some categories are so much easier to write than others.

Send one in

The best thing on this site is the stuff other people sent. If you have one, send it in. It takes about 20 seconds and you do not have to leave an email address, because there is nothing to email you about.

Questions, corrections, or a complaint about a joke that was not as clean as I thought — the contact page goes straight to me.
