Lord of the Rings
18 jokes, all of them clean
Lord of the Rings jokes run on 2 things: a ring that everybody wants, and a cast with names built out of ordinary English. Tolkien was a philologist, so the words were engineered before the story was. That is why these hold up better than most fandom puns.
How does Treebeard send messages? Through the branch office.
Why can't you trust Sauron with a secret? He's always got his eye on everything.
Why don't Nazgûl play poker? They always give themselves away with a shriek.
What's Gollum's favorite side dish? Onion ringses, precious.
What's a hobbit's favorite app? Instagram — for the food pics, obviously.
Why did Legolas get kicked out of class? He wouldn't stop elf-ing around.
Why did Boromir go to therapy? One does not simply walk away from their problems.
How many meals does a hobbit eat before noon? However many you're not watching.
Why is Gimli terrible at hide and seek? Nobody tosses a dwarf — but everybody hears one.
Why does Gandalf make a terrible hallway monitor? Nobody shall pass.
What did Frodo say when the oven timer went off? "The bread! It's done, Sam. It's done."
Why did the Ent take forever to answer? He didn't want to be too hasty.
What's Aragorn's favorite breakfast? Strider-fried eggs.
Why doesn't Sauron use a smartphone? He already has a seeing stone with unlimited data.
What do you call a hobbit who loves math? Bilbo Bag-sums.
Why did Sam become a gardener? He never met a potato he didn't like. Boil 'em, mash 'em.
Why is Frodo terrible at carnival games? He just can't let go of the ring.
Why was the Balrog late to work? He got held up on the bridge.
Why the wordplay is baked in
Tolkien invented the languages first and the plot second, which means the names carry real sound patterns instead of being made up on the spot. Legolas gives you elf. Gollum gives you the precious hiss for free. Sauron's whole character is an eye, so any joke about watching writes itself. Add the ring, which is already a homophone doing 2 jobs before anybody says anything, and the topic is unusually well stocked.
Reading the room first
This is the fandom where the jokes get long. Rings, second breakfast, the walk to Mordor — a lot of them assume the listener has sat through the extended editions. Most people have not. The onion rings one works on anybody. The rest are better with somebody who has actually made the trip. Know which kind you are holding before you commit.
The one to actually use
Gollum's side dish is the pick, and it wins on delivery rather than wordplay. The joke is only funny if you say the last word the way he says it, which means the pun is doing half the work and your voice is doing the other half. Nothing else on this page has that. The Boromir therapy one is the smartest joke here, but it needs the listener to know a line from a film released in 2001, so it lands with roughly half the room and confuses the rest.
