18 jokes, all of them clean

Pokémon puns are the most literal on this site, and that is not a criticism. The names were built to be puns in the first place — Slowpoke, Snorlax, Pikachu. Half the work was done in 1996 by the people naming the creatures.

The names were always jokes

Nintendo's naming team packed a description into every name, then localised it into a second one for English. Slowpoke is slow and it is a poke. Squirtle is a squirt and a turtle. So a Pokémon pun is usually just noticing out loud what the name was already doing. That makes them easy to follow and easy to remember, which is why kids repeat them back within about 4 seconds.

The one age group that always gets these

Pokémon has been going since 1996, so the audience runs from 6 to 40 and both ends know the same 20 creatures. That is rare. You can tell a Pikachu joke to a kid and to their parent and get the same groan. Ideal for a family car ride. Less ideal for a coworker who quit after Red and Blue.

The one to actually use

The Slowpoke one, and it is not close. Every other joke on this page bends a name to make it fit. This one does not bend anything — Slowpoke is genuinely the name of a genuinely slow Pokemon, and the joke is just noticing it out loud. That is why a 6-year-old can repeat it correctly on the first try, which is the real test for anything in this category. Pika-choo is the runner up and it is a sneeze joke, so treat it accordingly.

Every joke is read by a human before it goes up. Keep it clean — PG-13 at the very edgiest.
